History of Islamabad
Islamabad was purpose-built in the 1960s as Pakistan's modern capital, replacing Karachi. Designed by Greek architect Constantinos Doxiadis on a grid of lettered sectors at the foot of the Margalla Hills, it is one of the world's youngest capitals ā a planned city of wide avenues, parks and contemporary Islamic architecture, with the nearby ruins of Saidpur Village and the historic Rawalpindi anchoring its older past.
