History of Swat
The Swat Valley was the heart of ancient Gandhara and an early cradle of Mahayana Buddhism — its hills are dotted with stupas, monasteries and the giant rock-carved Buddha of Jehanabad. Later the seat of the Yusufzai Pashtuns and the princely Wali of Swat, it is celebrated as the 'Switzerland of Pakistan' for its alpine meadows and rivers.
